Macedon

21 March 1883

On March 21, 1883, the steamship "Macedon" was wrecked on Transit Reef near Rottnest Island whilst on a trip to the north of Western Australia. Earlier, on departure from Fremantle's South Jetty , the vessel had attracted a lot of interest, as it was to be the first steamship to proceed up the coast eastward of Port Walcott. On board were Surveyor General, Sir John Forrest, and his Kimberley survey party. The loss of the Macedon caused the team great inconvenience and expense, and within a month, the ship's owners, James Lilly, Anderson and Marshall, were out of business. They subsequently amalgamated with the Adelaide Steamship Company.
