The Port of Fremantle container terminal was opened by the WA Premier, the Hon. David Brand MLA on 29 March 1969. The S.S. "Encounter Bay" was the first container ship to arrive in Australia from overseas, entering Port on its maiden voyage from the United Kingdom on 29 March 1969. It was berthed at the new container berth - the first to be constructed as part of the "up-river extensions". On 23 February 1993, the "Encounter Bay" visited Fremantle Port for the 100th time.
