The cargo/passenger ship "Martha Bakke" departed on her final voyage from Fremantle on 26 Jan 1983, having been a regular caller for 22 years. The vessel was replaced by the "Anna Bakke".
The first consignment of 1,200 live crayfish from W.A was loaded into special sea water tanks on the "Martha Bakke" in Dec 1982 for shipment to Japan. The crayfish went to display tanks in Japanese restaurants.
19 April 1983
In a brief ceremony in the Nagoya Port Authority office building on Tuesday 19 April 1983, the Port of Fremantle and the Port of Nagoya signed an agreement on sister port affiliation. The main purpose of sister port affiliation is the development of trade and mutual understanding.
July 1983
A port record number of 2,733 imported motor vehicles stretched almost the entire length of Victoria Quay when they were unloaded from the "K" Line carrier "Melbourne Highway" in July 1983.
Preparations began for the 26th defence of the America's Cup at Fremantle, with marina berths and a new spur groyne constructed at the Fishing Boat Harbour.
