A delegation from the Port of Seattle visited Fremantle Port Authority in February 1991 to formally sign a sister port agreement with the Authority.

April 1991

The "USS Missouri" became the third longest ship to enter the Inner Harbour when it visited the Port of Fremantle in April 1991. It was the vessel's first visit to Fremantle since 1980. At 270m long and with a 11.9m draught, the vessel could not have entered the Inner Harbour prior to its dredging to 13 metres.

When she arrived at Stirling Naval Base in 1991 the "USS Louisville" was the first US Navy submarine to visit Western Australia for five years.

July 1991

Fremantle Port Authority's 48 year old vessel "Lady Mitchell" was sold in July 1991. Purchased in March 1948 by Fremantle Harbour Trust, the ex "HMAS Tonal" (RAN small harbour tug) was named in honour of Governor James Mitchell's wife. The vessel served as a pilot and general purpose vessel for 42 years until for economic reasons it was decommissioned in late 1990.

When oil spilt from the "Kirki" off Jurien Bay during July 1991 Fremantle Ports staff were called on to help with the clean up. The vessel had been on its way to the BP Kwinana Refinery to discharge oil when the spill occurred. The State Committee for Combat of Pollution of the Sea by Oil, at which the Authority is a member, co-ordinated operations.

August 1991

Fremantle Port Authority's 80 tonne floating crane, the "Pelican" was withdrawn from service at the end of August 1991. Built in 1947 the steam powered crane spent 5 years in the Port Authority's service but was withdrawn from service because of high maintenance costs and low usage.

23 August 1991

Fremantle Ports made history when it moved its 420 tonne portainer crane 500 metres across land on heavy lift trailer on 23 August 1991. It is believed that this is the first time in Australia that such an operation was carried out. The crane was moved from berth 12 to the rear of berth 9 where it was upgraded at a cost of $2.5 million.

National Terminal (Australia) Ltd installed a 62 - tonne lifting capacity container crane in North Quay in October/November 1991. The 750 tonne crane arrived in port on 21 October 1991 from Glebe Island, Sydney as part of National Terminal's $5 million project to redevelop its facilities in Fremantle.
