Trade through the Port of Fremantle was boosted in January when the Mediterranean Shipping Company announced the introduction of a new direct service between Fremantle and Europe. Six liner ships on the Australia/Europe rotation meant a dramatic increase in cargo carrying capacity. Previously, MSC was operating ships with 900 TEU capacity, the new ships had a 1,500 TEU capacity.

13 February 1992

Thousands of West Australians flocked to Fremantle on 13 February 1992 to see the arrival of the 'Queen Elizabeth 2' on her third visit to the port.

1 March 1992

Access at North Quay was changed on 1 March 1992 when a new gate allowing 24 hour entry to the area was opened. No 5 Gate replaced No 4.

30 June 1992

The Prime Minister, Mr Paul Keating, launched Fremantle Landbridge Project at the Port of Fremantle on June 20, 1992. The study confirmed Fremantle as Australia's best port for landbridging cargo form south-East Asia and Europe.

5 October 1992

In August 1992, the Mediterranean Shipping Company announced that Fremantle was to become the company's first discharge port in Australia. The new arrangement saw the company double its port calls to Fremantle. The first MSC vessel to visit under the arrangements was the 'Maria Laura' - on 5 October 1992. The Company's decision provided a valuable landbridge cargo boost for Fremantle.

26 October 1992

The 'Semco Giant' - a massive heavy lift submersible deck cargo barge - arrived in port on 26 October 1992 with two giant modules on board for Woodside offshore petroleum's $2 billion Goodwyn A Gas Production Platform on the North West Shelf.
