A container of donated goods, including 4000 pairs of children's sandals, leaves Fremantle Ports for East Timor.
The shipment was the first in a new co-ordinated system developed by Fremantle's shipping community in association with aid agencies and other organisations.
The aim was to make it easier to get donated goods to Dili for distribution by Australian relief agencies currently working to help the East Timorese.
Organisations involved in setting up the system of regular shipments include Fremantle Port Authority, the Maritime Union of Australia, the CFMEU, Nor West Shipping, Australian Provision of Health and Education Development Abroad, Father Brian Crisis Care Centre, the Port Operations Task Force, Australian Customs, Notre Dame University and The West Australian newspaper.

A landscaping consultant was been engaged to prepare the landscaping strategy for areas under Fremantle Port control, and to provide guidelines for complementary landscaping on leased areas.

Continuing strong growth in container trade was one of the highlights of another successful year for Fremantle Port in 1999-2000.
The increase of almost nine percent brought the number of TEUs, (twenty-foot equivalent units) to more than 300,000 for the first time.
Since 1990/91 container throughput at Fremantle has increased by an average annual growth rate of 10.7 per cent.
Total container exports increased by 6.1 per cent and container imports were up by 11.5 per cent on the previous year's result.
