A strong emphasis on responsible environmental management has helped Fremantle Port Authority to achieve the rigorous ISO 14001 environmental management standard. Certification to this international standard was granted this month, following an external audit of Fremantle Ports' Environmental Management System.

Fremantle Port Authority commissioned a new continuous ship unloader at the Bulk Cargo Jetty in the Outer Harbour at Kwinana. The unloader was supplied and installed by Swedish company BMH Marine AB.
The contract with BMH Marine AB required the unloader to have a capacity of 17,500 tonnes per day based on a 22.5-hour working day. In addition, it had to have a 25 tonne lifting capacity to place front-end loaders and excavators used in the unloading and clean up of the vessel.

Fremantle Ports' new pilot boat, Parmelia, built at a cost of $1.62 million, received a water cannon welcome as it made its first appearance in Fremantle Port on Sunday, 28 October 2001.

The Western Australian Government finalised purchase arrangements for industrial land and facilities at Kwinana to attract new industry and employment.
Under an agreement signed with BHP Billiton Ltd , LandCorp and Fremantle Ports purchased a 207 ha property at Kwinana for $24 million.
Fremantle Ports acquired 43 ha and has also purchased BHP Transport and Logistics' bulk handling operation which handles products including mineral sands, silica sands, cement clinker, petroleum coke and liquid petroleum gas.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the land, located in the State's premier heavy industry zone, was a key strategic investment for the State.
