The Mexican Navy sailing ship, Cuauhtemoc, will visit Fremantle from 6 - 11 June as part of a circumnavigation training cruise, and will be open to the public.
Cuauhtemoc won second place in the Australian Regatta of 1998 and has participated in international events such as the Great Tall Ships Cutty Sark Regatta; the Centenary of the Modernisation of the Osaka Harbour in Japan; and the Seven Seas Festival in Holland.
The 89-metre, three-masted bark, Cuauhtemoc, has a beam of 12.5m and a height of 50m. Displacing 1800 tonnes, it was built in Spain in 1982, and has sailed nearly half a million nautical miles. It has trained officers from the Mexican Naval Academy for twenty-four years. The ship is named after the Aztec prince, Cuauhtemoc, who was nephew to the last Aztec king, Moctezuma.
