More than 3000 United States Sailors and Marines arrived in Fremantle today (2 May 2008) aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa
In addition to rest and relaxation, Tarawa crew members will volunteer their time and services to assist at the Cohunu Koala Park where sailors and marines will assist park volunteers with weighing and documenting the park’s koala bears.
“Our sailors and marines are volunteering their time with the local community because we share the same values-- we want to help and we want to make a positive difference when and where we can,” Commanding Officer Captain Brian Luther said.
Tarawa has arrived directly from the US 5th Fleet area of operations. While on deployment, Tarawa provided disaster relief and humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh in the aftermath of tropical cyclone Sidr, in addition to operations in the Persian Gulf area.
A visit by a US Navy Expeditionary Strike Group can inject more than $2 million dollars a day into the local economy.
