New Ferry Landing Opened On Fremantle Waterfront

Fremantle Ports new ferry landing on Victoria Quay provides a direct link between Perth and central Fremantle for passengers on Swan River cruises.

Fremantle Ports' new ferry landing on Victoria Quay provides a direct link between Perth and central Fremantle for passengers on Swan River cruises.

The landing, named in honour of Inner Harbour designer, C.Y. O'Connor, is between B and C berths, opposite the E-Shed Markets.

At a quayside ceremony today, Planning and Infrastructure Minister, Alannah MacTiernan said the new ferry facilities were part of the Fremantle Waterfront development taking shape at the western end of Victoria Quay.

"River travellers can now get on and off the ferries at a convenient location adjacent to Fremantle's train station and the central business district.

"O'Connor Landing is also a very accessible river terminal for the nearby Maritime Museum which is due for opening in December.

"The Museum is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and now that people can access historic Victoria Quay by river, we hope many will take this opportunity," the Minister said.

The improved ferry berth, built by Fremantle Ports at a cost of $1 million including the parking facilities, has an electrically operated ramp which can be adjusted in height to accommodate approved ferries of different sizes.

Captain Cook Cruises has entered into a licensing agreement with Fremantle Ports to use the landing, and it is envisaged that licences will be negotiated with other ferry operators in the future. Several Rottnest ferries will also continue to use this part of Victoria Quay.

Other elements of Fremantle Waterfront project currently planned include a proposed Commercial Precinct for which expressions of interest have recently been sought, realignment of the freight rail line closer to the passenger line, and construction of a new public access road and pedestrian/cycleway to the West End of Victoria Quay using the land currently occupied by the rail line.
