The significance of Fremantle Port in Western Australia's history and development is represented in a major public artwork designed for Victoria Quay.
The work, unveiled today by the Minister for Culture and the Arts Sheila McHale, is entitled "Southern Crossing". It is located on the lawn at the south western corner of the E Shed Markets.
A slightly larger than life sculpted bronze figure carrying a suitcase under one arm and a ship in the other is the central element. A passageway reminiscent of a ship's gangway is another integral component, and the artwork also features the names of many ships which have been associated with Fremantle Port over its 105-year history.
A dingo incorporated in the work is a reference to indigenous Australia and a reminder of the Dingo Flour Mill mural, one of the strong visual images for people arriving at Fremantle by sea.
Fremantle artist, Tony Jones, who is also responsible for the C.Y O'Connor sculpture at Coogee, was commissioned to create the new artwork. He was selected from a field of 19 artists in an Expressions of Interest process.
At today's unveiling ceremony, Sheila McHale described "Southern Crossing" as a complex and interesting work which explored many themes associated with Fremantle Port as Australia's western sea gate.
"As well as its vitally important role as the State's major general cargo port, Fremantle has played a significant part in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people who have settled our shores.
"This project has provided an excellent opportunity for local, State and Federal bodies to work with the arts community and private enterprise.
"It represents a partnership between Fremantle Ports, the City of Fremantle and the Artists Foundation of Western Australia, with strong funding support also from the Mediterranean Shipping Company, P&O Ports, the Australia Council and Arts WA.
"I commend all of the organisations and individuals who have contributed to this project.
"Their effort and support, combined with the imagination and ability of the artist, Tony Jones, has provided Victoria Quay with an outstanding artwork to be enjoyed by all who visit this part of Fremantle," the Minister said.
All elements of the work have been designed and constructed to withstand the weather conditions associated with the location. Issues of public safety have also been addressed.
