Fremantle Ports is undertaking maintenance dredging in the Inner and Outer Harbours over the next few weeks.
The dredging is essential to maintain the navigational depths required for shipping and the safety of Fremantle Port waters
Material removed by the suction dredge will be deposited in a contained area at Rous Head, where the silt and sand particles will settle.
This dredging will ensure that the channel depths marked on navigational charts are correct.
No new deepening or dredging of new areas will be undertaken and there are no seagrass beds in the areas to be dredged.
Some of the dredged material from the Success Channel will include high-quality shell sand which can be used by Cockburn Cement. Suitable material will be stockpiled in an approved area on the seabed in Owen Anchorage for use by Cockburn Cement as required.
Depending on weather and sea conditions, the dredge will operate 24-hours-day for about four weeks.
