Relocation of freight rail line near Victoria Quay

Work to relocate the freight rail line near Victoria Quay will take place from 8:00 pm Friday 5th November til 5:00 am Monday 8th November 2004.

orks Infrastructure is currently undertaking a construction project within the rail reserve adjacent to Victoria Quay for Fremantle Ports and the Public Transport Authority.

The project involves relocation of the rail freight line closer to passenger line and construction of a new public access road from Gate 2 to the western end of Victoria Quay. The new road will greatly improve public access to the Fremantle Waterfront and will also make available additional land at the eastern end of Victoria Quay for cargo handling, particularly for motor vehicle imports.

To facilitate the relocation it will be necessary to temporarily shut down all train movements (passenger and freight) over the weekend from 8:00 pm on Friday 5th November through to 5:00 am on Monday 8th November 2004. Operations will involve earthmoving machinery, track machinery, welding, grinding and lighting equipment. The Public Transport Authority will provided bus services to rail passengers during that period.

The Cliff Street level crossing will remain open to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, but the pedestrian maze near the Fremantle Railway Station will be closed while the work is carried out.

The work will generate noise. Additional lighting will be used so work can continue throughout the night to achieve the changeover in the shortest possible time.
