Local steel pipe supplier for deepening project

Steel pipes at the Henderson plant

A milestone has been reached in Fremantle Ports’ Inner Harbour deepening project with the awarding of the first contract. A $6 million contract for tubular steel piling was awarded to Steelpipe Australia.

The company is supplying 3000 tonnes of steel pipe piles for the reconstruction of Berth 10 on North Quay from its Henderson plant. It will supply 900 12-metre long piles. Most will be 610mm in diameter and all will have 16mm thick walls.

Inner Harbour deepening Project Manager Walter Cambruzzi said it was pleasing that the contract could be awarded to a local company and that Steelpipe Australia had the capability to deliver in accordance with the project’s program and quality requirements.

Walter said responses received in relation to Fremantle Ports’ request for early contractor involvement proposals were being evaluated. He expected that a construction contract or contracts would be awarded during December 2008, with work starting in January 2009.
