Fremantle Ports’ Vessel Traffic Manager Alec Millett has been recognised by the Australasian Hydrographic Society for his voluntary efforts in promoting hydrography — the science and art of marine exploration.
Alec was awarded a rare individual award, the Patron's Letter of Appreciation, by the President of the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies, Paul Hornsby, at a World Hydrography Day celebration in June.
“Receiving the Patron’s award was quite humbling but nice affirmation that the effort I’m putting in is working for the benefit of members,” Alec said.
“Hydrography has been fundamental to Australia since early European discovery and continues to this day with incredible technology used for offshore exploration, charting and marine environmental monitoring.”
Alec said that in applying the Dynamic Under-Keel Clearance system to maximise draft capability for bigger ships, Fremantle Ports used the latest in multibeam sonar technology and charting software, along with modern environmental sensors.
