Reporting suspicious activities or items
Visitors, customers and tenants alike must report suspicious activities or items in the port area, to either the Port Security Centre on 9335 1300 (Emergency number), or the police.
Following on from the terrorism events on 11 September 2001, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) agreed to develop security measures to address maritime security around the world. As a result, the IMO developed and adopted security measures to be included as amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, 1974 to which Australia is a party. The amendments to SOLAS include new preventative security measures to protect international ships and the port facilities serving them, while minimising the impact on international trade.
The new International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) came into effect worldwide on 1 July 2004. New federal legislation is now in place, giving effect to the Australian implementation and interpretation of the code.
