Six winners have been selected for the inaugural Fremantle Ports Paint the Port Community Day competition.

Even though the event, scheduled for Saturday 14 March, had to be cancelled for COVID-19 precautions, the competition was still able to be held.

People had already entered photographs, paintings and drawings before the event and judging steamed ahead behind closed doors.

The Open Category winners, Wai Leong Ow for photography and Dana Shave for art, were ecstatic with their awards and said that they were keen to participate in the next Paint the Port.

Entries were judged by esteemed Fremantle photographer and blogger Roel Loopers and Mosman Park artist, sculptor and former art educator Ian Lilly, who both praised the entries as fantastic work and a challenge to judge.

Roel Loopers spoke highly of the winning entry, Mirage by Wai Leong Ow (below).

“This is a beautiful shot with the reflection of the containers,” he said. “It’s just so nice that someone actually sees that; it shows someone being really observant.”

Ian Lilly said the superb winning art category painting, Tugboats at Work by Dana Shave (below), was a lovely example of watercolour painting, a difficult and delicate medium rarely seen or properly appreciated in modern times.

“The asymmetrical harbour composition is strong yet seemingly casual and matched by the atmospheric depth wherein the central detail is encompassed by the subtle treatment of sky and water.

“One almost feels that both the clouds and the ripples and reflections in the foreground are moving.”

Fremantle Ports Corporate and Community Relations Manager Neil Stanbury said Fremantle Ports was very pleased with the entries: “There was a lot of hard work put into these submissions and we’re eager to see what people come up with next time,” he said.
